New Jobs and a Thriving Economy
Charlie Copeland is the only candidate for Lt. Governor with real-world business experience at creating jobs, developing and meeting a budget and growing a business. It is this experience – instead of big-government theories -- that he will use to put Delaware’s economy back on track and help create good, family-sustaining jobs.
Charlie Copeland understands firsthand how government can be a resource or a roadblock to economic growth. For far too long now in Delaware, it has been a roadblock...with the policies of the Minner-Carney-Denn administration causing our state to rank dead last in the nation in the start-up of the high-tech/bio-tech industries that are the future.
Charlie believes that Delaware must focus its energy on attracting the businesses of tomorrow to our state -- like renewable energy and late stage bio-tech opportunities – while also implementing policies that spark new growth for existing employers, small businesses and entrepreneurs. That’s why he was one of the major sponsors of the law that creates a multi-state compact to allow Delaware to join New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland to pool our efforts to attract federal science and technology grants.
Charlie also knows that the best way to attract new jobs to our state – and help displaced workers – is to ensure that our workforce is trained for the jobs of the future. That is why he has advocated for workforce training and re-training initiatives as both a legislator and community leader.
In the late 1990s, Charlie co-founded the non-profit Challenge Program to provide vocational job training to at-risk youth in New Castle County. In the 13 years since the program has been in existence, dozens of disadvantaged youth have learned tangible job skills that are benefitting them as they go through life.
Charlie also proposes providing grants to unemployed and underemployed Delawareans to obtain additional education and/or retraining at any facility approved by the state’s Workforce Investment Board. Through this program, we will be able to increase the standard of living of our citizens and provide employers with a higher-qualified, higher-skilled workforce.
